Fit In a Minute: Fitness and Recovery

I think the common public has a misconception of what it means to be “fit”. For instance, there is a difference between being skilled at a sport as opposed to being “fit”.
If there was an obstacle course like Ninja Warrior and you were going to pick your winner. Will it be Jay Cutler the body builder? Tiger Woods the professional Golfer? Perhaps the swimming phenom Michael Phelps. They are all qualified athletes in their respected sport, but I might choose some exercise nut out of a local gym over those guys if I had to make a guy run through an obstacle course.

    The section on Fatigue is interesting:

    “Fatigue will mask an individual’s true fitness level. In other words: Making yourself tired for the sake of making yourself tired, and accumulating more and more fatigue is a tried and true recipe for zapping your strength (and performance). As an example, let’s say we go ahead and figure out what your one-rep max is for the deadlift. Afterwards, you go out and run 10 miles.

    Upon your return we decide to re-test your deadlift. What are the chances you’ll even sniff that original number? My guess is you’d have a better shot at winning the lottery and getting struck by lighting in the same day.

    To that end, it’s often beneficial to implement structured de-load weeks where the goal is to allow the body to rest and recover. There are a multitude of ways to approach a de-load week: Decrease total reps, decrease total number of exercises performed, omit direct spinal loading, maybe even take a week and perform outdoor activities rather than hit the gym.

    The point is, in order to make consistent progress, it’s imperative to give your body a break every now and then.”

      Your friend Jeremy seems to have wrote an awesome article, dood. Writing skills and patience is not my forte. Hence the reason why I video tape myself babbling about the topic for roughly a minute. : )

      Being “Fit” is all relative to how the person sees themselves or in comparison to others.

      Bottom line is, if you’re going to earn your millions like your good ole’ cousin Vijay Singh, benching or dead lifting your body weight might not be in your priority when it comes to being “fit” and you might rather prefer being “skilled” at your game instead. : )
